Fishing, Hunting and Gathering Gallery

Over 35 million people inhabit North East India. They are engaged in a number of sustenance-level occupations. From among the various occupations, fishing, hunting and gathering are highlighted in this third gallery.

The variety of fishing-baskets - both with valves and without valves - is indeed an attraction. Each one is labelled. Each label shows clearly the name, and the place of origin of these baskets.

The display of instruments used for hunting is another attraction. They too are labelled and placed carefully. The baskets used for gathering the fruits of people's agricultural labour too are of many kinds. The background sketches make this gallery pleasing and informative at the same time.

Agricultural Gallery

The people of North East India have been practising cultivation as their primary occupation from time immemorial. Three types of cultivation are in vogue: Wet cultivation, Jhum cultivation and Terrace cultivation. The people use different agricultural implements of varying sizes and shapes. All these come alive in the agricultural gallery. Large-size dioramas depicting plough cultivation, terrace cultivation and jhum cultivation against the village and hilly backgrounds give a clear picture of the different sequences of cultivation.
