The
economic life of the people of North East
India depended primarily on traditional
technology for their existence. In the past
each tribe living in isolation and having
very little or no interaction with other
tribes lived as self-sufficient units. People
developed their own village industries using
mostly the raw materials locally available.
The industries shown in this gallery are
pottery, wine-making, basketry, blacksmithy,
goldsmithy, weaving, wood-carving, leather
works and cane works.
The products of these are displayed in the
adjacent show cases.
The dioramas depicting the various skills
in a natural environment will allow the
visitors to catch a glimpse of the life-pattern
of the people. Write-ups explain the role
and importance of traditional technology
in the lives of the people.

Gallery |

This
two-module gallery, furnished with three
types of houses with a courtyard each, depicts
the traditional system of making baskets.
The courtyard scene in front of each house
containing raw materials, instruments, animals
and household articles gives the impression
of a real household. The display of different
artefacts and basketry items further embellishes
this gallery.
The second module in this gallery has several
divisions such as the foreground, the background,
the ceiling, and the display materials which
are merged into a single piece. It appears
like the interior of a house and the translites
fitted at the windows provide a village
room impact.
