Each
one of us is born into a culture. None of
us is born with a culture. Culture is acquired
by living in society. It distinguishes us
from every other kind of creatures. It includes
everything that goes to make our life as
social beings. It is expressed through myths,
symbols, language, rites, music, art and
paintings, dances, style of building, lifestyle,
worship forms, values, customs, habits,
understanding of life, the meaning people
give to various happenings in our environment,
etc. In other words, the concept of culture
is all pervasive. "It englobes the totality
of what a people are, the way they think,
live, act and behave." All this can be summed
up by saying that man is a cultural being.
In its deeper dimension it is the human
spirit that expresses itself through culture
or cultures. At the heart of each culture,
therefore, there are spiritual values which
take the form of religious traditions.
